Is the Ford Edge a Good SUV?

The Ford Edge is an OK midsize SUV, but it fails to stand out from the pack. This Ford has an impressive amount of cargo room for a midsize two-row SUV and plenty of passenger space, but the seats themselves aren't that comfortable.

Ford's infotainment system is user-friendly and easy to operate, but the graphics are plain and underwhelming compared to more modern systems. Though the interior is generally well-built, there are some noticeable hard plastic surfaces throughout the cabin. The Edge boasts spry acceleration and well-mannered handling.
Should I Buy the Ford Edge?

The 2020 Edge is an enticing choice, especially for shoppers who only need seating for five. It offers lots of standard infotainment features as well as a long list of driver assistance and active safety technologies. Great fuel economy also enhances its appeal as a commuter car.

That said, there are many good crossover SUVs to choose from, so it's worth shopping around. The Mazda CX-9 is a well-rounded midsize SUV that gives you three rows of seats, as well as dynamic handling and a first-rate cabin. The fully redesigned Ford Escape is smaller and less expensive than the Edge, but it has more-engaging handling than its larger sibling, as well as an excellent amount of passenger and cargo space for its class.

The Edge hasn't been fully redesigned since the 2015 model year, and it has seen only a few major changes since. For 2016, SYNC 3 became available for the first time, replacing the much-criticized MyFord Touch interface. The next significant update came with a refresh for 2019 when Ford refreshed the Edge's design, replaced the old six-speed automatic transmission with an eight-speed, and made a bundle of driver assistance features standard. 2019 also saw the ST trim replace the Sport trim.

For 2020, the new Ford Edge gains standard dual-zone automatic climate control, but it is otherwise largely unchanged. The 2019 Edge is nearly identical to the new model and likely less expensive. If the 2019 updates don't interest you, look for an Edge from 2016, 2017, or 2018 to save even more money.
